Local Lumber: Siding

Here are some common answers to questions we get about siding.

What local siding do you offer?

We specialize in siding made from local lumber species– pine, poplar, white oak, and red oak. Our main sellers are pine (board and batten, shiplap, or shou sugi ban), poplar (board and batten, shiplap, or shou sugi ban), red oak (board and batten), and mixed hardwood (reverse board and batten).

What’s the least expensive siding?

Pine board and batten is the least expensive siding we offer at ~1.50/square foot.

What are the common lengths of your siding?

Our most common siding length is 12’6”. For large orders, we will sometimes do 8’^” or 16’6”.

Can I put my siding up green/fresh-off-the-mill?

Yes, we and our clients often put up the boards of a board and batten siding first and let the boards dry in place before adding the batten.

Does my siding need to be kiln-dried?

Not always. If you are putting siding on a barn, where it will be in open air, kiln-drying is often an unnecessary expense. I recommend kiln-drying your siding in the following situations: when it’s for a home, for a client, when you want sterilized lumber, or when the lumber will be receiving Shou Sugi Ban treatment.

Does my siding need to be edged?

Edging is a great process for siding boards because it takes out most cupping, and makes installation easier. It’s not necessary though.

Can I send you a take-off and you tell me how much we need?

We can give you a rough estimate based on your home blueprint; however, your builder will need to make the official request.

Do I need a rainscreen?

For farm structures, a rain screen is not necessary. For residential construction, we recommend that builders install a rain screen over the house wrap then screw horizontal furring strips 32” OC into studs. Vertical siding can be nailed into the furring strips.

Can you cut trim boards to match the siding?

Yes, we typically cut trim boards to match the siding. We can cut specific thicknesses so trim boards fit flush to the trim plane.

Can you cut bevelled siding?

No, we don’t cut beveled siding.

Can I install this siding vertically and horizontally?

Yes, our builders use our boards in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

What thicknesses do you cut for lap siding?

We cut siding thickness between ½” and ⅞” for horizontal lap siding.

Do you sell western red cedar?

No, we only sell local species.

Can you supply enough cedar to side a house?

If we have enough cedar logs then, yes, we can cut enough for a house. However, local eastern red cedar trees tend to grow sparsely and small. It’s not often that we have enough to do a large house.
