Local Lumber
We sell large volumes of lumber to local builders, architects, homeowners, and woodworkers. All of our lumber is from logs that we source locally and mill ourselves; we are not a broker, and we do not source lumber from elsewhere and resell it. Our specialty is siding, timbers for timberframe projects, framing lumber for barns and agricultural buildings, shou sugi ban siding, and rot-resistant wood for outdoor structures.
Overview of Process
At our Saxapahaw facility, we are a cut-to-order business, which means we do not offer small volume retail sales. We’re typically booked out four to six weeks on large orders. Builders let us know what they need for an upcoming project, and when they need it, and we have it ready by their deadline— either fresh-off the mill, kiln-dried, and/or processed into tongue and groove paneling, etc.
Minimum Order Size
Our minimum order size for all lumber sales is 400 board feet. Eventually, we’d like to able to accommodate smaller orders (someone needing one 1x8 to fix a cracked eave) but we are not able to do small volume sales at the moment. Similarly, we don’t sell small volumes of kiln-dried hardwoods for woodworkers. We’re lucky to live near the Hardwood Store of North Carolina for small volume kiln-dried sales.
Common Species
The most common species that we sell are pine, poplar, white oak, red oak, and cedar. Feel free to call and ask if we have other species, because we sometimes have large quantities of maple, hickory, pecan, ash, persimmon, walnut, and other local hardwoods. We tend to not have any species that aren’t local to central NC (locust, osage orange, white pine, etc).
Common Dimensions
See our Common Dimensions price list for the most common lumber products and services that we sell.
Common Lengths
Our most common size for pine and poplar is 12’6”. We calculate pricing for these boards at 12’ exactly, so the extra ~6” is our margin of error for processing that you get for free. Our next most common lengths are 8’6” and 16’6”. We are always to cut other lengths if the order size requires it and we order-in logs in advance (eg, you need 2000 board feet of 14’ feet material).
Common Thickness: Clarifying “1x” and “4/4”
We can custom cut any thickness you need, usually within a 1/8” accuracy. Because we work with both woodworkers, who use the actual to describe the dimensions they need, and builders, who use the nominal scale, we distinguish between them by saying “1x” or “2x” when referring to nominal and '“4/4” or “8/4” when talking about actual thickness. In the world of rough-cut/bandsaw milling, the nominal “1x” doesn’t include the 1/8” material that has been removed in the kerf, so the actual thickness is 7/8”.
Stickering
If you order rough cut, the price is typically for lumber dead-stacked. We sometimes sticker and stack softwood lumber order in the summer months, free-of-charge, because it’s so critical to do so to prevent blue-stain. For the rest of the year, we charge $75 per hour for stickering and stacking lumber orders by request only.
Beams and Timbers
We specialize in beams and timbers for timberframe and post-and-beam construction. See our Common Beams and Timbers price sheet for information about dimensions. These are typically cut and used green without kiln-drying. We do not offer planing or joinery-cutting services. If the timber order is over 600 board feet, we may be able to kiln dry it for $1 per board foot for the first two weeks, then $1 per board foot per week thereafter.
Siding
We specialize in all kinds of siding— from rough-cut pine board and batten to highly-finished T&G painted shou sugi ban. Send us a take-off to get started and we’ll provide an estimate.
