Millwork Services
Here are some common answers to questions about our millwork services.
What millwork services do you offer?
We offer four types of millwork for large volume of lumber
Edging (cutting rough boards to be an exact width)
Planing (milling boards to be smooth and/or of similar thicknesses)
Trimming (cutting boards to be exact lengths)
Shaping (putting tongue and groove or shiplap profiles on the lumber).
What’s the minimum quantity for millwork services?
400 board feet is our minimum millwork order. We have some flexibility on this for orders that involve multiple processes.
How much do millwork services cost?
We charge $1 per board foot for each millwork service.
What’s the purpose of edging?
Edging removes a small amount of wood on either side of a board, thereby making it perfectly straight with a consistent width. It erases any variation that may have occurred during milling or air-drying.
What’s the maximum width for edging?
Both of our edgers can mill up to 12” wide.
Why would I need my lumber planed?
We recommend planing your lumber when it will be in contact with skin (interior wall paneling) or when a consistent thickness is required (flooring). It’s also a good idea to plane your siding if you are having us apply a Shou Sugi Ban finish.
What is the maximum width for planing?
Our planer maxes out at 20” wide.
Do you plane beams?
No, we only plane lumber 2.5” thick and under.
What is the minimum thickness for planing?
We will plane down to 11/16”.
What type of shaper profiles do you offer?
We offer shiplap and tongue and groove profiles.
What is nickel gap, and can you do it?
Nickel gap is a profile attribute wherein the joint exposes a section of the board below. Sometimes this is around ⅛” wide. Yes, we do a lot of nickel gap profiles.
Do you recommend shiplap or tongue and groove?
We highly recommend tongue and groove for flooring, and recommend it for paneling and ceiling boards. Shiplap’s main advantage is that it is easier to install. In most cases, tongue and groove offers more rigidity and a tighter seam over time.
What is the maximum length for shaped boards?
12’6” is our maximum length for shaped boards.
What is the minimum thickness for shaped boards?
11/16” is our minimum thickness for shaped boards.
